So what’s it like?
What is competing in The Redback really like if you’ve not done an event like this before…? Well I think it could be summed up in one word – ‘super-fun’.
The event is designed to be fun and achievable for riders of all abilities, the trails are a dream and the race logistics make it super-easy to be part of. Do it – it will be your dream MTB holiday!
The event attracts riders of all speeds and abilities, yes – the flyers up the front are some of the best riders in Australia, but the mid-field is made up of weekend-warriors who enjoy their riding and are not too caught up about their average speed or their overall place. Many riders come to the event for a new and unique experience in a part of Australia they have not visited before so they enjoy the riding and then enjoy a few beers with their mates afterwards.
In fact many riders come together with a group of mates or fellow members of their MTB club for a fun holiday doing what they love together. But even if you’re coming solo you’ll find that the whole scene is very friendly and you’ll soon make plenty of (lifelong) friends as you race against each other on the trails in the morning and then hang out around the pool together in the afternoon.
Riders can select to compete in all 6 stages across the 4 days and really get a taste for the local trails OR you can pick-and-mix the races you want to do and enjoy some sightseeing in between. The ability to do just 1 or 2 stages is ideal for riders who are just starting out or for the husbands / wives of 6-stage riders who want some time away from the bike as well because it gives you a taste of the action without having to commit to all stages.
So all in all, the race attracts all types – from elite riders chasing the podium to plenty of recreational riders who participate for the challenge and to enjoy the trails and the incredible Red Centre scenery.
So write it in your diary, round up a few mates and book yourself an incredible MTB holiday you’ll never forget.
"I recently competed in The Redback and had a blast (despite a few bumps and bruises along the way - I really need to learn how to ride at night!). I'm just an old fart who's new to MTB - saw your race advertised, liked the challenge so entered..... I loved it. Great courses and really great organisation and service around the event. Chatting to other competitors during the event I mentioned a few times, and I think its true, that somehow you have found a really great balance between having everything organised and working, but at the same time not appearing over-managed and leaving the sense of adventure in the event - that's why we do this stuff in the end!" "Thank you for my incredible Redback experience! The event was superbly organized with course markings being the best I have ever encountered, never leaving me worried I was heading off the right track. I enjoy doing Rapid Ascent events; this one definitely did not disappoint and has left me pumped for more!" Jessica race competitor
"I loved riding this event. The variety of trails and the great organisation of the event and their communication with riders was awesome. I love the sport of mountain biking and how it can take you to so many places and give you so many different experiences." Michael Milton 2016 race competitor
"Most epically awesome 4days of MTB racing ever. Through the pleasure and pain I managed 3rd place against some amazing chick riders. A huge thanks to all the riders out there and well done to everyone that rode over the last 4days. Had the best time both on and off the dirt ?????? ." Mel 2016 race competitor
