STAGE DETAILS

The stages have been tweaked for 2017 to include the best of the best riding Alice Springs has to offer with several new trails included to provide even more great riding.

And remember that you can either enter The Redback in full and race all 6 stages OR you can pick and choose the stages you want to do - which is great for riders with less experience, husbands / wives of riders who want to sample the fun but not do it all, and locals who still need to go to work on Thursday and Friday.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS AND DETAILS

Desert Technologies Stage 1:

When: Thursday 17th August, starts at 9:30am
Distance: 41km (including escorted ride through town)
Approx riding time: 1hr55min for winners
Terrain and riding style: A varied ride starting on roads tracks and then long continuous sections of flowing single track.
Sponsor: Desert Technologies

The Redback gets under way from our official event hotel – The Mercure - with a police escort on the roads before diving into the first of Alice Springs’s famed single track in the “West Side’ area.

After some fast sections of double track to spread the crowd out, Stage 1 kicks off with the punchy ‘Hell Line’ single track along the National Park boundary before opening out a bit into faster flowing, cranking trails that carry you though to the finish.

With almost ‘too much single track’ stage 1 sets the scene for a great weekend+ of riding to come.

Rapid Ascent Stage 2 – Anzac Hill Climb:

When: Thursday 17th August, staggered starts from 4:30pm
Distance: 300m
Course record: Ben Mather 42 sec and Jodie Willet 58 sec.
Location: up the Anzac Hill scenic road in the centre of town!
Terrain and riding style: A pedal to the metal hill climb up a sealed road to a scenic look out at the top.

Stage 2 is an individual time trial hill sprint up the ANZAC Hill scenic look out in the middle of town. Its only 300m from start to finish but when its lined with spectators shouting and screaming their encouragement, and glory of a mountain top finish at the top - this is an all-out blast against the clock to see who can smash it out the fastest.

Despite being short and sharp, this is a popular and very social stage as everyone watches each other sprint up the hill. Concluding at sunset the summit provides some great views over the local area and is great for families and spectators as well.

Our official beer sponsor aBloc will be serving beer and mineral water from a pop-up bar at the summit to add to the enthusiasm and entertainment of this social stage.

Schwalbe Stage 3 - Individual Time Trial:

When: Friday 18th August, staggered starts from 9:00am
Distance: 22km
Start / finish location: Alice Springs Golf Course.
Note the Golf Course bar and café will be open to serve food and drinks before, during and after racing and is a great place to watch the event.
Terrain and riding style: An individual time trial with slowest going off first and fastest going off last (based on general classification). Riding is along a flowing mix of single track interspersed with sections of 4WD track.

Stage 3 is another individual time trial – this time along the flowing trails in the Sunset Hill area south east of town. The 22km course follows some of the fastest sections of single track in the Red Centre with plenty of fast straight-aways and high speed corners to keep you on the rivet the whole way.

Riders are set off at 30sec intervals in reverse order according to the overall standings after stage 2 so all you have to do is hold off your followers and try and catch the rabbits in front!

NT Tourism Stage 4 - Night Race:

When: Friday 18th August, starts at 6:45pm.
Distance: 22km.
Start / finish location: Alice Springs Golf Course. Note the Golf Club bar and restaurant will be open to serve food and drinks before, during and after racing and will be a great place for a beer and a meal after the race.
Terrain and riding style: A night race with all riders setting off as a mass start at night using their own lights. The course is a mix of single track interspersed with occasional sections of 4WD track.

Stage 4 is held shortly after sunset and is one of the (many) highlights from the Redback as it is conducted as a night MTB race through the outback. Starting to the pumping tunes of thunderstruck shortly after sunset, all riders set off together with your own headlights lighting the way for an incredible night race under the star filled desert night sky.

The course is the exact same as the stage 3 individual time trial raced in the morning so riders are familiar with the terrain and can be wowed by the experience of racing at night together. This is an absolute blast.

Lasseters Stage 5 - 43km cross country:

When: Saturday 19th August, stage starts at 9:00am
Distance: Approx 42.5km

Approx. riding time: 2hrs+ for the winner

It’s a fast, undulating and flowing course on a gravely and sometimes loose surface. Some rocky sections and technical riding but also some of the sweetest single track you will encounter in the country including some purpose built new trails.

Riders will take in the most popular trails such as Helmet track, Sink, Shitter track and other Alice Springs Classics that will surely put a smile on your dial.
