Entries open today to Australia’s most popular series of off-road runs – The Trail Running Series presented by The North Face that is conducted by renowned event managers Rapid Ascent.
The Trail Running Series features a mix of five short distance trail runs at a range of beautiful wilderness locations all within an hour’s drive of Melbourne from June through to October.
The Series returns for an eighth year in 2018 with a new Saturday night race, some exciting course tweaks, new competitions and a whole lot more great wilderness running.
This incredibly popular series has revolutionised trail running in Australia with welcoming and accessible races for runners of all fitness levels.
The races attract over 1,200 runners from first timers through to elites who get a real thrill from trail running by racing through valleys lined with tree ferns, weaving through towering gum trees and bounding along flowing trails beside rivers, creeks, beaches and lookouts.
Each event features a short course race that varies in length between 5km and 7km, a medium course race of between 10km and 15km and a long course race that starts at 15km and extends to 23km at its longest. Competitors can enter all races or choose just the races that suit them.
The 2018 Series launches with Race 1 at Westerfolds Park, Templestowe in June, then moves to Smiths Gully in the Yarra Valley in July for Race 2.
Race 3 takes place at Silvan in the Dandenongs in August, which also includes a 2.2km Kids Run adding even more fun to this popular event – the highlight of the series for many runners.
Race 4 at Anglesea on the Surf Coast in September follows on from the action of the Surf Coast Century 100km Ultra Marathon of the day before, forming a real festival weekend of trail running, complete with a 1.9km Kids Run.
The Series concludes in October where runners light up the flowing inner city trails beside the Yarra for the thrilling night race series finale, finishing with a massive after party at the new location of Yarra Bend on Saturday night.
Event manager Sam Maffett said a large appeal of the Series was that it allowed runners to become fully immersed in nature on little known trails, running down fun single tracks that pass through some really scenic landscapes located close to Melbourne. His sentiments echoed by competitors.
“It’s great to have the opportunity to run a race in places like these; it’s the freedom of running through the trails that make it so spectacular,” said Sonia O’Sullivan, Series Competitor.
“We wanted to create these opportunities for runners to enjoy trail running and the many benefits it can bring to theirs lives – the endorphins, the fitness and health and importantly the friendly social vibes and friendships.
“We’re so proud to be continuing the Series into its eight year, it has brought trail running into the lives of so many new people over the years and we look forward to welcoming many more this year as well as the return of many familiar faces. We love this Series and we can’t wait to kick things of this June for Race 1!”
