Kellie Emmerson, Elite Ambassador for the 2017 Surf Coast Century has some tips for what you can do in the lead-up to September, now race day is under 19 weeks away.
“The Surf Coast Century might seem like ages away, but it will be here before you know it!
Start planning now. That includes:
- Plan some training blocks. If you plan out your weekend long runs in advance, you are more likely to prioritise them and get the quality training in.
- Plan out a couple of training weekends on course with friends (but don't forget to check the tides!). Knowing the course well helped me considerably over the past few years.
- Book in the Trail series! These races are great fun and a fabulous way to improve your trail speed and confidence.
- Be specific. If you can't easily access the course, try to plan for some specific training in other ways. Can you find a beach for some sand running? Can you get to the hills? Where can you practice climbing under tiny bridges?! You don't need to do this all the time, but a few sessions here and there will better prepare your mind and body.
Plan ahead and you'll be in a much better place come race day.
Kellie is a running phenomenon and has won the 100km Surf Coast Century for the last 3 years in a row - 2014, 2015 and 2016 – breaking her own course record each time! She has been on the Australian team for the last 2 Trail Running World Championships, stood on the podium of many major races and is a popular runner on the local ultra scene.
But more impressive than her successes is her attitude… Kellie is one of the happiest and most un-assuming runners you’ll ever meet who’s more than happy to pass on her experience and encourage others to join her on the trails.
