Entries have opened to Australia's largest off-road triathlon, X-Adventure Dunsborough, which will see over 1,500 competitors race through the beautiful wilderness surrounding the holiday township of Dunsborough in South West Western Australia on 25th-26th March 2017.

X-Adventure is the ultimate mix of triathlon and adventure racing; featuring ocean swimming, trail running and mountain bike riding through a beautiful landscape.

The action weekend includes races of four different distances for all ages and levels so everyone can be part of the action, from the premier Long Course Race over 35km down to the Grom’s X-Adventure over 2km for junior competitors.

X-Adventure Dunsborough, now in its fifth year, takes place in one of the most spectacular settings of any race in the world, amongst the pristine coastal wilderness of Geographe Bay and Meelup Regional Park in South West Western Australia.

Adventure racers swim through turquoise water, run along a sculpted granite coastline and golden sandy beaches, and mountain bike across roller coaster single track through fields of wildflowers and native grasstrees.

“It is very exciting to be bringing the fifth edition of X-Adventure to WA,” said Sam Maffett, Event Manager, Rapid Ascent.

“We’ve made some small tweaks to the start, but racers, support crews and spectators can expect more of the fun, thrills, challenges and friendly camaraderie out on the course that X-Adventure Dunsborough has become famous for,” Maffett said.

“Dunsborough is an adventure paradise, it’s such a beautiful area and the community really embraces the event. There’s an incredible atmosphere on event weekend with young people, novices and elite athletes all competing alongside one another, and the support from the crowd on the beach, sidelines and at the finish is just phenomenal,” he said.

The premier event, the X-Adventure Long Course features the 1500m Dunsborough Lakes Ocean Swim, 12km Coast Trail Run, and 20km Mountain Bike; attracting a range of racers from corporate relay teams through to weekend warriors and elite athletes.

Two-time X-Adventure champion and professional triathlete Ben Allen of Wollongong is a big fan of the Dunsborough course.

“The course is amazing - a great swim, rock hopping along the coast, able to pick up a bit of speed on the trail run on the way back and then the mountain bike course just speaks for itself - it’s a mountain bikers dream with heaps of single track and twists and turns. I was smiling the whole way!” Allen said.

French elite triathlete Simon Billeau, now based in Perth, is excited to be getting off-road in March, after a successful year of competition so far including wins at Karri Valley and Rottnest Island.

"This race is definitely growing in popularity firstly because it's located in the beautiful region of Western Australia, and secondly the number of courses attracts a wide community of triathletes and off-road enthusiasts. For me, I chose this race because I'm passionate about triathlon and I love it even more when it's off-road," Billeau said.

The X-Adventure Short Course was designed to form a pathway into the sport of adventure racing; created especially for younger racers, off-road converts, novices and intermediate triathletes and adventurers. At half the distance it consists of a 750m Dunsborough Lakes Ocean Swim, 6.2km Coastal Trail Run and an 11km Mountain Bike to finish.

A new X-Adventure Champions Schools trophy will be awarded in 2017 to the school with the fastest two relay teams and individual in the Short Course; upping the ante for younger racers who can now challenge for the title, and school glory.

“We always provide great encouragement for junior athletes to be involved with our events and we hope this new category will inspire even more schools and students to get into adventure!” Maffett said.

“The new schools category in the X-Adventure Short Course race gives schools and school aged kids their very own event category meaning they can now compete against each another equally.”

The weekend also includes two events especially for kids meaning that the sporting stars of tomorrow have a chance to join the fun. The extremely popular Kids X-Adventure features a 200m swim, 2.5km trail run and 4km mountain bike and has attracted nearly 300 kids to compete over recent years.

The Groms X-Adventure was added in 2016 with an 800m trail run and 1.2km mountain bike and is targeted to kids up to 8 years of age, providing them with a perfect introduction to off-road adventures.

Dunsborough’s Geographe Bay coastline is one of Western Australia’s most popular holiday destinations, located just 30 minutes from Margaret River in the state’s South West. It is home to stunning scenery, cosmopolitan cafes and restaurants, beautiful wineries, and range of accommodation and things to do, meaning competitors and spectators are in for a fabulous weekend down south.
