Race 1 - Westerfolds Park

Race 1 Course description

A new venue for the 2017 series, Westerfolds Park provides some ideal trails and bushland environments for runners to enjoy. Competitors will run along flowing trails beside the Yarra River, through stands of Red Gum and Manna Gum dodging kangaroos, over bridges and along patchs that will feel a world away from the urban world not too far away.

All courses consist of generally flatish running with just a few gentle undulations and minimal technical features under foot like rocks or roots. With easy terrain and flowing trails - Westerfolds Park provides an ideal introduction to the trail running series with accessible courses at a popular, nearby venue. We’re sure you’ll love it!

Course description

Long Course - 15km

(Course goes in an anti-clockwise direction on the map)

Starting next to the kids’ playground, all runners get up to speed on the Westerfolds Park Circuit path before turning right and the descending to pass under Fitzsimons Lane bridge.

Runners complete a short loop on a mixture of wide gravel paths and tree lined single track in Candlebark Park area before returning to the flowing single track next to the Yarra River to pass back under Fitzsimons Lane bridge.

Runners continue to follow the river downstream on a mixture of the Main Yarra Trail and some fun, flat and fast sections of single track that weaves in and out of the trees beside the river. Cross over the Yarra and continue along the riverside trails, over Bonds Rd and complete another short loop before crossing over the River a second time at the Odyssey House footbridge where you get a second great view up and down the Yarra and some of its lesser known rapids.

After crossing the bridge runners complete a short section on some quiet suburban streets to re-enter Westerfolds Park at the very western end of Porter St and follow the main trails back through the eucalypt bushland to the HIIT Factory Home Straight into the finish line. Congratulations, that’s race #1 done!

Medium Course - 10.6km

(Course goes in a anti-clockwise direction on the map)

The medium course is very similar to the Long Course, but omits the loop downstream of the Odyssey House footbridge and takes another shortcut towards the end of the long course to make return you to the finish line after a very pleasant 10.6kms. Well done – that’s race #1 done!

Short Course - 5.1km

(Course goes in an anti-clockwise direction on the map)

Starting next to the kids’ playground, all runners get up to speed on the Westerfolds Park Circuit path as it descends to the river before turning hard left approx. 200m before the bridge to pick up some of the fun, flat and fast sections of single track that weaves in and out of the trees beside the river.

Turning off the Mail Yarra Trail just before the first bridge, short course runners then travel through another beautiful section of eucalypt forest adjacent to the river before turning left and up a small rise to cross the flat parkland then its down the HIIT Factory Home Straight into the finish line adjacent the kids playground.

Well done, you’ve just conquered and set your own record at Race 1 of the Trail Running Series on a NEW course location for 2017, congratulations.

Course marking

Trail running events are quite different to road running they are not lined with fences or red and white flagging tape and will not have marshals every 100m ready to hand you a drink and direct you where to go every step of the way - you need to keep an eye out for and follow the course markings to make your way around. Keep concentrating and always keep your eyes open and up for course markings, this will make the course very easy to follow and much more interesting.

The following is how the courses will be marked on race day:

Long course:

  • Red and/or orange arrows (pegged into the ground and fixed to trees or bushes)
  • Fluoro pink coloured plastic surveyor’s tape (tied to trees or bushes)

Medium course:

  • Green arrows (pegged into the ground and fixed to trees or bushes)
  • Green coloured plastic surveyor’s tape (tied to trees or bushes)

Short course:

  • Blue arrows (pegged into the ground and fixed to trees or bushes)
  • Aqua blue coloured plastic surveyor’s tape (tied to trees or bushes)

All track intersections will be clearly marked and care should be taken to follow the arrows. Surveyor’s tape will be placed immediately following a track junction to confirm you are on the correct track. Track markings on the longer, straighter sections, where there are no other options or intersections will be far more spread out so take your time at the intersections to make sure you are on the right track. Unless otherwise marked or directed, competitors should follow the most major track at all intersections. If there is no arrow at a minor track junction then continue along the major track.
