We’re thrilled to have Team Mountain Designs join us for the Falls Creek Mountain Raid Adventure Race this year, for the first time. Since the Queensland-based team was formed in 2002, they have clocked up some extremely impressive achievements worldwide.
The team makeup has changed over the years, with the current team consisting of Leo Theoharis, Kim Beckinsale, David Schloss and Gary Sutherland.
Gary Sutherland and Leo Theoharis will represent the team in the 2-Day, Long Course Adventure Race.
Here’s their story.
About Team Mountain Designs
Significant race wins: Geo-Quest, 2 x XPD's, 7 x Dark side 18hr, 6 x Hells Bells 24hr.
They have raced in China, Borneo, USA, Sweden, Alaska, Mexico, New Zealand, Brazil and of course, Australia.
About Gary and Leo
Leo is currently in Melbourne for family and work (he’s a plumber) but usually lives on the Gold Coast.
Gary lives on the Gold Coast and keeps busy with 4 kids and working as an irrigation contractor.
Have you been to Falls Creek before?
Gary has been to Falls Creek for the old Keen Adventure Race, but had an ill team mate so only did some sections of the race.
The scenery was awesome, trekking through and above the tree line up Bogong, and the mountain lake was a highlight.
What are you most looking forward to about the race?
Racing in the mountains as most of our racing is coastal hinterland.
We look forward to the shorter faster format as it keeps the racing exciting and given you stop at night it’s a great opportunity to catch up with the other teams for a couple beers before racing again on Sunday. This is a treat for us as many of the other teams are our friends that we rarely get to socialise with (unless it’s on the race course).
What are you most nervous about?
The navigation as we haven’t been on maps since November so feel a little rusty.
Given you travel all over the world, other than your race gear… what do you never leave home without?
For me, Gary, it’s my kindle - it helps me get to sleep at night by taking my mind off the race to come.
Leo won’t leave home without his personal Barrister and frother as coffee for him is like breathing for the rest of us.
Thank you Gary and Leo! We’re looking forward to having you at the event; no doubt you’ll provide lots of inspiration for the less-experienced adventure races.
